Hi, I agree with Adrian although I'm coming from the other side of the fence as a marketer trying to get coverage. I still send in releases for all the reasons Adrian has outlined above. However, I do use social media and the likes of twitter to direct message journalists saying I've sent one in as I'm aware their inboxes can be extremely cluttered and it works very effectively for me. I've been kicking around in marketing for longer that I'd like to say and every 5 or so years there's always a big hooha about something becoming obsolete and such and such will replace the other. It's all about integrated marketing - using best of all new and old technology to engage. Good post. Cheers.

All good points Adrian. Personally, I would like to be sent web-ready images for product news with the option to download high resolution print quality ones from a database, which is linked to in email. An example of good practice is Dell - they have a link to their Flickr channel with plenty of great images for download in different size options.
